No stopping Portuguese bike exports as growth reaches 38%

AGUEDA, Portugal – Portuguese exports in the two-wheel and soft mobility sector grew 38% in the first half of 2022, Eurostat data confirms. Importantly, e-bike exports grew by more than 60%. For the third consecutive year, Portugal continues to be the largest bike producer in Europe.

Following on from record export figures in May, the figures released by Eurostat match the observations of the Portuguese industry association, ABIMOTA. These figures represent a growth in exports, as well as an exponential growth, in terms of added value, both in traditional bicycles and e-bikes. For the first half of this year, the increase was 38%.

Investment in production

“These figures are the result of all the work that has been done, in terms of production effort, but also, and fundamentally, in terms of growth in the scale of value in bike production,” declared the Secretary General of ABIMOTA, Gil Nadais referring to the investment in production capacity in Portugal. Last year, Bike Europe published a series of reports on these investments which includes Carbon Team, Fritz Jou and RTE.

“It is remarkable that production and exports of e-bikes grew by more than 60%. We cannot fail to mention that in components, especially in the group of pedals and cranksets, as well as in bicycle frames, the growth was over 70%. As we announced earlier, May had been the best month ever, but July surpassed all values, reaching almost €100 mln in terms of export value,” Nadais confirmed.

Leading position in Europe

“The figures provided by Eurostat confirmed ours, which indicated that Portugal continued, and continues, to grow significantly in bicycle exports. In 2021, we exported 2,900,000 bicycles, which keeps us in the lead, for the third consecutive year,” concluded Gil Nadais.

During Eurobike, ABIMOTA announced that it expects last year’s record sales of €594 mln will be surpassed again in 2022. The record export level in May and now also in July clearly shows that the country’s industry is well on track.
